Project I

Geometry + Form:
Expressions through Architectural Design Elements and Principles

[ The Serial Geometric Tattoo Transformation ]

The project introduced us to the application of design elements and principles into the manipulation of geometric shapes. This project was structured in groups and conducted via a series of workshops whereby we were thoroughly guided through these fundamental principles. Through this project, the creation of abstract artworks were eventually extracted into three-dimensional works and models with the use of form transformation techniques.

Design Intention

To create an artwork that guides the viewer's attention using directional movement revolving around a centralised reference point to introduce the element of space whilst being rooted in the principle of symmetrical balance, enhanced by the use of depth and contrast.

A great start to the module as these fundamental elements will be constantly referred to upon subsequent projects and further along other studio modules. Nonetheless, it was a tremendous experience working with my team, being able to experience the constant sharing and discussion of ideas.

Project II

Tectonics:
Design Principles, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration

[ Isolation Structure ]

IMG_3714_edited.jpg

Under the theme of isolation during the recent COVID-19 pandemic, this project aimed to introduce us to anthropometrics and ergonomics, alongside a selected amount of materials (timber, steel, rope, and fabric), in order to design a quaint, 5㎥ structure. One banal action was to be chosen, and the structure should express and allow for the selected banal action.

Design Intention

Utilising the objectives of the project to inform and enhance a space that represents the journey of discomfort, and regret into acceptance and hope, with the principle of asymmetry.

Simply, learning about the basic materials and their joinery methods was certainly a good practice. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of researching about material properties and the exploration on banal action. My application of materials could've been better, however nevertheless I appreciate the process of this project.

Project III

Interpretation and Representation:
Principles, Tectonics, and Sensory

[ Sensory Space ]

A final conclusive project to the previous two, Project III prompted us to craft out a structure containing a series of spaces - sensorial spaces - that expressed the personal emotions of our experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. The material pool consisted of: timber, steel, and fabric, with the new additions of glass and concrete, whilst the scale of the structure can now be 20㎥.

Design Intention

To craft a series of spaces that poetically embraces the journey of convalescence as portrayed throughout the pandemic. This is achieved through the use of materials and emphasis to dictate different sensations, whilst embracing the beauty of sitting and crawling.

Poetic expression has always been one of my interests and this project embraces this aspect. Whilst I'd struggled through the development stage by having too many ideas without one I could comfortably settle on, I feel satisfied about my outcome to a certain degree. All in all, it was still a learning experience for me which I am certain is to be reflected on upon entering semester two.
