Taking Design Communication as an online, instead of physical module, has its ups and downs. Of course, I favour the ease in time management this provides, however physical peer learning had to be compromised in lieu of this change. Prerecorded lectures were used instead, and I find myself grateful that I'd taken my foundation year to prep me for this module. Nonetheless, Dr. Lia and Ar. Carrol were very kind in guiding me and my peers in this module, despite the lack of physical interaction.
Project I
Movie Poster
The first assignment for this module instructed us to produce a movie poster in order to assess our skills in composition, drawing, and typography. As such, we were required to include both natural and manmade elements in our poster, alongside an appropriate presentation of our film with a title and subtitles containing information such as the key actors and the director.
Below the rattle and cackle of the train tracks, below Larrydow Station, Ophelia stares languidly out of the small crack in the wall, breathing in the far-fetched breath of liberation. Jonathan, her captor, is about to depart for his daily gambling stint. A slight wisp of an opportunity for liberation is there, but Ophelia’s first attempt gifted her a black eye and broken lips, whilst her second gave her a broken leg. Perhaps she will sit this one out. That is, until she meets a mysterious tigress by the name of Aiti, who dwells in the embroidery of the dress her mother gifted her.
Overall, I found this first task a great practice for my drawing and painting abilities. I chose to detail a steam-engine into my poster not only due to the storyline, but also to challenge myself on technical difficulty. The entire piece was also executed via watercolour, which presented to me the versatility of watercolour as a colouring medium when it is able to apply in both thin and thick coats.
Project II
Farnsworth House
[ Model-making, Orthographic Projections, Axonometric Projection, Perspective Drawings ]
This project was broken down into four separate parts that aimed to assess our abilities to execute model-making alongside the multiple variations of drawings that is crucial for communication.
A hefty project overall, however the process of capturing details via drawing conventions is applicable here. Having undertaken the Introduction to Drawing module from foundation, I found this assignment a good refresher and outlet for me to practice, however not particularly groundbreaking. I found perspective drawing the most challenging out of the others, understandably, however I appreciate understanding the technique of perspective projections from a measured drawing.
Project III
Presentation Board
The final assignment of this module tasked us to compile most, if not all, of our drawings together onto an A1-sized presentation board, inclusive of rendering to be done accompanying the composition.
I decided to compose the presentation board through traditional and digital methods, so I am rather pleased with being able to incorporate both methods into my final work. I'd also though that this board lacked an interior perspective that displayed the home in use, which is why I also chose to sketch an additional drawing as an accompanying visual to the presentation board.
